Stinson
sm-8a detrioter junior
The
early thirties saw the dawning of a new era in
aircraft design. Our country was in the depths
of the depression, but certain segments of aviation
prospered.
The
fledgling aviation industry spawned numerous new
types. The ones that sold, however, were those
that flew well and offered an operator great utility,
therefore a profit opportunity. None filled this
role better than the Stinson Aircraft Company's
SM-8A Detroiter Junior.

In
April 1930 Stinson, already an industry leader,
unveiled the newly designed SM-8A Junior at the
Detroit Aircraft show. Value priced, it captured
the spotlight. It was roomy, comfortable, and
could carry a huge load. It was also an easy flier
with a forgiving nature. Stinson garnered more
orders than ever, and went on to sell a staggering
347 examples, including the identical 1931 “S”
model, in the ensuing two year period…more than
the rest of the industry combined!

Today,
the venerable SM-8A is the quintessential antique
airplane; classic in its style, roomy comfort
for four, great range and useful load, economical
to operate, incredibly docile and easy to fly.
Typically Stinson, the airframe is extremely rugged
yet simple translating to very low maintenance.
All this made it a winner as a new airplane, and
today makes it a perfect choice as a useful collector's
antique.
